About Us

Our shelter is registered with the State of Michigan and meets state standards for safety and cleanliness.

Who We Are

Great Lakes Humane Society is a non-profit animal welfare organization based in beautiful Leelanau County, Michigan. Founded in 2002, our mission is to advocate for all animals and includes adoption services.  In 2010, Great Lakes Humane Society established a shelter location on a 10 acre property about three miles west of Traverse City, Michigan.  We strive to provide a home-like atmosphere for our shelter animals.  Visitors will find dogs playing in our spacious yards, lounging on sofas or curling on a rug under a table.

What We Do

Great Lakes Humane Society provides shelter, medical care and a bridge to permanent homes to abandoned and neglected animals.  Many are surrendered by private owners; others were about to be euthanized at overcrowded shelters or were rescued from dire situations.  We have no border, breed or age restrictions.  Great Lakes Humane Society works with both local and international rescue organizations.  While most of our animals come from Michigan, we also have taken in dogs from the Southwestern United States as well as Puerto Rico, Egypt and Bosnia.  All visits, adoptions and surrenders are by appointment only.

Would You Like To Help?

The most important things you can five to our animals are time, love and attention.  Please consider volunteering to take a dog for a walk or field trip outing, or simply stopping by to brush and cuddle with our residents.  Because of the cost of sterilization, vaccinations and treatment of medical conditions, our largest expense is veterinary care. Financial contributions are greatly appreciated and can be made via PayPal, online at our website or Facebook page, or mailed directly to Great Lakes Humane Society.
